I've been watching that auction. I've wanted an older cabinet with the vertical vents, but I'm disappointed in that it looks like 5/8" plywood, not 3/4". That just seems like awfully big panels for less than 3/4"...... and 3/4" still needs reinforcement. Plus, aren't the 803A's supposed to be sub-par compared to 803B/416A's?

Yes, they are 5/8" construction, though of a higher grade plywood, better quality control construction and higher density coating than in later years and with its much higher tuning combined with its lower peak output capability doesn't need as much bracing.
An original 803 is hardly sub par per se since they are pretty much a no compromise design for this particular speaker and the electronics it was voiced with Vs later units that were optimized for a broad range of cab loadings at higher power, so in this cab has a superior mids/HF BW and flatter response down to the cab's tuning, but the trade-off is a higher Fs, F3/Fb, Qts, lower Vas and minimal Xmax, so if used in sealed or BR, best used in pairs if not corner loaded.
The 803A had a bit lower Fs and higher Vas to keep pace with changes in movie soundtrack, HIFI BWs, so a little less optimum for the cab.
In today's multiple channel, ultra wide BW 'world' though, with only one of either it's best used as a period correct electronics mono rig for spinning vintage movies, RTR tapes, vinyl IMO. A corner loaded pair tuned lower OTOH will IMO be superior overall to later models, especially if driven with period correct electronics. A major downside is there's no OEM spec re-cone kits available for either, so once this speaker's 'magic' is blown, getting it back will eventually become an exercise in futility.
